This is who we are
Funky FMCG was born out of the ABC Hansen Group – which is primarily involved in the manufacture,
supply and installation of grain and food processing and storage equipment – as a natural progression
from manufacturing and supplying the equipment used for the manufacturing of various foodstuffs,
including flours, meals, nut butters and spices to food processors – to actually becoming involved
ourselves in the processing of food stuffs.
The ABC Hansen Group also operated a number of food processing centres during this time – including a
1500kg/hr wheat mill in Silverton, a 1500kg/hr wheat mill in Petit, Benoni, a 300kg/hr cold press
sunflower oil plant, a 500kg/hr achaar processing plant and a production plant for the mixing and
packing of premixes for bakeries – all of which were sold off to investors in the early 2000’s as the
equipment manufacturing and supplying business went from strength to strength and demanded more
time and attention from the shareholders.
It was thus a natural progression of the business, to go back to the food stuff manufacturing sphere –
after concentrating on designing and manufacturing the best possible equipment for our clients – to
start using our own equipment again to start processing food stuffs such as our lines of Funky Fred
Peanut Butter – with packaging in 400gr, 1kg and 20kg sizes, roasted and flavoured peanuts in 500gr
and 1kg pack sizes, and sorghum flour in 2kg, 5kg and 10kg sizes.
Funky FMCG combines the technical know how of the ABC Hansen Group on the operation,
maintenance and set up of the equipment, with the experience of running food processing facilities, to
produce excellent quality products, at competitive pricing.
The ABC Hansen Group has been in operation since 1991 – when started as a trading company, mainly in
the agriculture sector – in 1995, ABC Hansen Africa started manufacturing grain, spice and specialty
milling equipment in conjunction with our Danish shareholder, ABC Hansen A/S – and between 1995 and
2021, the group has manufactured more than 200 medium scale grain mills, with capacities between
500kg/hr and 2500kg/hr – mainly for specialty stone ground wheat milling, and conventional roller mill
maize milling.
In 2008, the ABC Hansen Group acquired Hippo Mills, a hammer mill brand that has been manufactured
in South Africa since 1928, and by modernizing the manufacturing process, more than 400 hammer mills
are produced annually, with approximately 25% of production being exported to the United States of
America, and North and Western Europe – and the rest of production being distributed mainly in SubSaharan
Africa.
The ABC Hansen Group operates an equipment manufacturing factory from a group owned 2,200m²
facility in Samcorpark, Pretoria – and operates the food stuff manufacturing and processing in a group
owned 1,100m facility, also located in Samcorpark, Pretoria.
